Walter Goes to Class
Doc dropped me off to start my two-week therapy dog training bright and early Monday morning. I was quite excited when we pulled in and I saw where we were, because I had such a good time the last time we went for an assessment. I hear Doc tell the patients that it’s important to approach new things with curiosity and openness and I agree because that is how I can learn, grow and be open to new things.
When we entered the front door to the waiting room, I was a good dog and sat by Doc’s side until I heard some dogs barking and then my body started shaking with excitement and I started barking in return. The trainer saw me through the reception window and started laughing and said “Walter sure looks excited to start school!” She was right and I was so revved up that when they came out to get me, I forgot to say goodbye to Doc. I hope that didn’t hurt her feelings.
After I went through the door, I was escorted right to the training room and went to work learning new commands. It was apparent right from the start what the expectations were. It just goes to show you the importance of direct and clear communication. We worked on and off throughout the day. At the end of the day I was one pooped puppy ready to go to bed. But before I went to sleep, I was still thinking about Doc and worried she would miss me. So, I was happy when one of the trainers took my picture and sent a text to Doc about my progress. They read the text to me before they sent it, and I am proud of what they had to say, so I am going to share it with all of you.
“Walter is settling in well and is getting acclimated nicely to his new routine. Today we worked on fine tuning his heel and automatic sit. He was very responsive this workout and made great progress each session. We will continue to layer in more commands going into this week. Another update soon!”
I sure hope that gave Doc some peace of mind. At this rate I just might end up graduating Summa Cum Laude from puppy school.
